September 3: “Back to School”

How did summer go by so quickly?

Our September program geared up for the school year by addressing some of the challenges of developing a critical multicultural curriculum. Given the recent passing of House Bill 2281 in Arizona, which bans the teaching of ethnic studies in public K-12 schools, what are other sites of struggle?

The program featured an interview with Sarita See,  professor of Asian Pacific Islander American Studies at the University of Michigan who talks about the stakes and the challenges faculty of color face in getting tenure in higher education. We were also joined in the studio by Phillip Dirks, director of the Upward Bound project at Portland State University, Sho Shigeoka, diversity coordinator at Beaverton Public Schools, and Patti Sakurai, APA Compass Collective member and Chair of Ethnic Studies at Oregon State University to talk about diversity and education in Oregon.
